CBD May Stop Spread of COVID-19

In a new study by Oregon State University, researchers discovered that compounds naturally found in hemp may help fight SARS-CoV-2, the viral infection that causes COVID-19.

The in vitro research found that these components can inhibit virus entry by blocking penetration into human cells. Although these findings are still in their early stages, researchers are hopeful that their findings could lead to potential clinical trials.

The implications of these findings are vast. If further research confirms these results, cannabis-derived medications may be a preventative measure against the spread of COVID-19.

Study Findings

The study, found here, uncovered that two prominent cannabinoids in hemp, cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), hindered the virus' spread by blocking entry into human cells. They also inhibited the virus from infecting healthy human cells, suggesting that these cannabinoids could possibly be utilized as a preventative against COVID-19.

During the experiment, researchers looked at two types of the virus, alpha variant B.I.l.T and beta variant B.I.35. COVID-19 has a variety of strains, so extra examination is needed to determine if these cannabinoids will be effective against all virus variants.

Further clinical trials are needed to determine the efficacy of cannabinoids in humans, but regardless, these findings are a meaningful breakthrough in the fight against COVID-19.

CBGA and CBDA

The cannabinoids used in the study, CBGA and CBDA, are abundant in hemp. CBGA is the precursor to all cannabinoids, while CBDA is a primary cannabinoid in hemp oil and CBD. Neither of these cannabinoids is psychoactive, meaning they don't produce the "high" associated with THC.

Since both cannabinoids are found in hemp, they could be potential sources of natural protection against COVID-19. Additionally, since they are typically found in hemp extracts, they would likely be more accessible and affordable than other medications.

Conclusion

While this study is still in its early stages, it provides hope for both hemp and cannabis as potential tools against this global pandemic.

Even though further research is required to determine the efficacy of cannabis cannabinoids in human studies, this study has unearthed hemp compounds as a potential preventive against COVID-19. This discovery means that hemp and cannabis may hold the key to stopping the spread of this deadly virus.
